Report: New iPhone will be thicker to cram in new tech

JOE

The consistent trend in the highly competitive smartphone market has been to go thinner and thinner with each new model.

But Apple are rumoured to be bucking that trend with their forthcoming ‘iPhone 6S’, which is reported to be thicker than the current iPhone 6.

A supposedly legit schematic drawing, published by Engadget Japan, shows a 7.1mm thickness for the new device, which is 0.2mm thicker than the most recent iPhone.

MacRumours speculate that the increase in thickness is in order to integrate Force Touch technology into the handset, which is already in use on the Apple Watch and MacBook Pro.

Force Touch enables a touchscreen to detect how hard it’s being pressed, so that a soft tap or a harder tap can perform different functions.
