Some have suggested that it is a strategic move by May - who campaigned to remain in the European Union - to appoint a renowned Brexiteer to such a prestigious office, so as to appease the more right-wing element of the Tory Party.
Others are slightly bewildered at a decision that places Johnson in a very responsible and diplomatically sensitive role when he has shown himself to be somewhat inconsistent and liable to high-profile gaffs.
