Gremio fans invade pitch and try to break VAR monitor after home defeat

Gremio fans well and truly lost their s**t after their defeat on Sunday night

There were violent scenes at the home of one of Brazil’s biggest clubs after Gremio fans stormed the pitch on Sunday night.

Gremio have struggled this season, despite having the likes of former Bayern Munich players Douglas Costa and Rafinha amongst their ranks, and sit second from bottom in Brazil’s top-flight with just 11 games to go.

Tensions were already high but the defeat to Palmeiras, which included two penalties for the away side, was the final straw and fans took to the pitch to vent their anger.

Footage shows large numbers of supporters storming onto the pitch before heading over the area of the ground where the VAR monitor was located.

The video then reveals fans attempting to break the monitor with several others seen attacking stewards and throwing objects as scenes got very violent.

Meanwhile players off the pitch waited in the tunnel while the violence took place with many of them looking shocked at the scenes that unfolded.

After a lengthy spell, fans eventually were escorted back to the stands after riot police stepped in to calm the frenzy down.

Unfortunately for them and the side, it doesn’t get any easier for Gremio as they take on league leaders Atletico Mineiro before travelling away to face their big rivals Internacional.

They’ll be hoping that their fortunes change quickly and results improve on the pitch so that they can close their seven-point deficit to their nearest relegation rivals.
