Manchester United have reportedly spoken to Rudi Garcia about taking over as manager on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Writing in The National News, Andy Mitten, the respected Manchester United journalist and editor of Uniter We Stand says the club have sounded out Garcia as an ideal candidate to take charge at Old Trafford for the remainder of the season whilst they look to continue their pursuit of a long-term option.

The 57-year-old was responsible for managing the Lyon side that knocked Manchester City out of the Champions League back in 2020 and helped to develop Eden Hazard when he was just a youngster coming into the first team from Lille.

It is believed that Garcia was spoken to by Darren Fletcher and John Murtough about the role in the run-up to United’s 2-0 win in the Champions League on Tuesday night against Villarreal.

Mauricio Pochettino is the favourite to replace the recently sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but reports have said that Paris Saint-Germain have rejected an approach from United. Speaking at a press conference ahead of PSG’s Champions League game against Manchester City, the Argentine told reporters he is ‘happy’ at the French club.

It was also recently revealed that United had spoken to former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde about becoming manager until the end of the year, but it now seems as if the club are looking at talking to multiple people in order to find the best candidate.

As it stands, Michael Carrick remains in caretaker charge, with Kieran McKenna alongside him as part of the coaching staff.  He is expected to be in charge for their upcoming game away at Chelsea this weekend.

It seems unlikely that the former United man will be given the chance to take charge until the end of the season, but a string of good performances may convince the hierarchy at the club to change their mind.
