Anything’s better than dead scorpions
Bear Grylls has spoken about his carnivorous diet after making the switch from being a vegan and claiming that raw vegetables are “really not good for you.”
The 48-year-old survival expert spoke to GQ about his sudden switch in diet following the covid-19 pandemic and now only eats red meat, dairy, and fruit. Last year, the Brit said he regrets killing so many animals to eat during his show, something he attributes to his guests.
But just a year later, Grylls has done a complete 360 and is now eating meat once again.
“Super against nuts. And against grains, wheat, and vegetables,” he explained. “My lunch is meat, eggs and dairy, a lot of butter, and fruit. I have liver probably every other day.”
The change was spurred after Grylls experienced “mega-sore kidneys” from consuming juice and vegetables when he caught covid. He’s now swapped out his vegetables for “quality grass-fed steak and liver” and has found he’s “started to get strong again.”
The carnivore diet has increased in popularity over the years, with the most notable example being podcaster Joe Rogan. But too much meat can result in gastrointestinal issues, dehydration, grogginess, and a daily intake of vegetables can help regulate moods and protect against cancer and heart diseases.
Registered dietitian Heidi Bates from McGill University’s Office for Science and Society said that there is “no body of evidence that suggests that vegetables cause illness.”
She added: “In fact, the opposite is true.
“There is an excess of evidence linking vegetable consumption to reductions in the risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and certain types of cancer.”
