Rooney is heading back to the dugout

Wayne Rooney is close to securing a quick return to management as former club DC United consider making him an offer to become their head coach.

Rooney left Derby County at the end of the season after the club were relegated to League One after serious financial trouble off the pitch, despite the recent takeover at the Rams.

However the work Rooney did at Pride Park hasn’t gone unnoticed, and the ex-England captain is held in high regard, recently being linked with the Everton job before they opted to appoint Frank Lampard.

The Daily Mail has reported that DC are looking for a new manager after they sacked Hernan Losada in April and put Chad Ashton temporarily in charge of the squad.

The MLS side are currently 13th in the Eastern Conference and have suffered nine defeats from 16 games this season.

Ashton knows Rooney well and was the club’s assistant manager when the former forward played for the side between 2o18 and 2020.

During his time in the US capital, Rooney enjoyed a successful spell, scoring 25 goals in 52 games, which included a sensational goal from the halfway line.

But the 36-year-old struggled to adapt to life with his family, which contributed to his departure two years after joining, when he returned to play for Derby.

England’s record goalscorer has spoken of his ambitions to continue coaching in the UK, with taking to the touchline at Manchester United the ultimate goal, but believes a spell back in the MLS would help make him a more rounded coach.
