Dan Burn gifted the shirt to the young fan

The father of a young Newcastle United fan has defended the woman who was caught trying to prize Dan Burn’s shirt out of his son’s hands.

Burn threw his shirt into the crowd after Newcastle’s dominant 3-0 win at Leicester City on Boxing Day for 11-year-old fan, Nathan Junior Surrey.

But in footage released on social media, one woman appears to try and pull the shirt away from young fan before another supporter intervened.

Nathan – the father of the fan, who goes by the name of NJ – explained how the altercation came about. “NJ was standing on the rail shouting ‘give us your shirt’,” he told  The Sun.

“Then Dan Burn pointed at him and gave the top to the steward who threw it into the crowd.

“An older woman grabbed it and started tugging on it, then the man in the middle, who she was with, also snatched it but he said he was getting it for NJ.

“I don’t want anyone to be slated, everyone gets carried away and anyone would try to grab the shirt. If the steward hadn’t broken it up and got the shirt it may have ripped or he wouldn’t have got it.”

Luckily for NJ he was able to get the shirt and plans to frame it alongside a pair of gloves gifted by Martin Dúbravka, who is currently out on loan at Manchester United.

Newcastle gave their fans a late Christmas present as their routine win saw them climb to second in the table. Three first half goals from Chris Wood, Miguel Almiron and Joelinton ensured Eddie Howe’s side continued their excellent season.
