Andros Townsend admits he should have spent longer on Ronaldo celebration

‘Maybe I should have spent longer on the celebration because it wasn’t great!’

Everton midfielder Andros Townsend jokingly admitted that he should have ‘spent longer’ on copying Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous celebration following the Toffee’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United this (Saturday) afternoon.

Townsend scored the equaliser after Anthony Martial had given the hosts the lead on the brink of half-time and during his celebration, took the opportunity to mimic Ronaldo’s iconic ‘siiuuu’ celebration by attempting it himself.

It certainly silenced the Old Trafford crowd, but Townsend felt that he could have spent more time working on it.

He said: “Maybe I should have spent longer on the celebration because it wasn’t great”

The 30-year-old, who couldn’t stop smiling during his interview with BT Sport’s Des Kelly, also confessed that he did the celebration out of respect more as oppose to mocking and described being able to play against Ronaldo as an honour.

“He’s my idol.” Townsend exclaimed.

“I grew up watching Ronaldo. I would spend hours on the training pitch trying to execute his techniques.”

Everton looked good value for their point and on another day could have grabbed all three, however Yerry Mina’s close-call goal was adjudged to have been just offside.

Meanwhile at the full-time whistle there was another sense of missed opportunity in the air as United failed to capitalise with Ronaldo showing the biggest frustration of all as he walked down the tunnel alone at the full-time whistle.

It cranks the pressure up on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with their fellow title rivals yet to all play this weekend, leaving the Red Devils vulnerable to being overtaken and losing further ground in the race for the Premier League.
