King strips Cadbury of royal warrant after 170 years

It doesn't seem like King Charles is much of a chocoholic

One of Britain's most beloved and iconic brands, Cadbury has had a royal warrant since 1854, when Queen Victoria awarded it to the company.

A royal warrant is an official document issued by the royals to a company or individual that supplies goods or services to the royal household.

It signifies that the supplier provides high-quality products or services and has gained the royal household's trust and approval. The warrant allows the holder to display the royal coat of arms and the phrase “By Appointment” on their products.

But it seems like Charles isn't much of a fan of Cadbury, which has now lost the royal seal of approval.

On December 19, King Charles and Queen Camilla issued around 400 Royal Warrants, which last for up to five years.

Most of these were renewed warrants that were granted by Queen Elizabeth II. This included companies such as Kellogg's cereal and Moet Champagne.

However, some 100 companies are believed to have lost their warrants, including brands such as Cadbury and Unilever.

Companies who have not had their royal warrant renewed will have been informed by letter. Some of these brands will simply not have applied to have their warrant renewed though.

King Charles is known to be a very healthy eater, so it's thought the amount of Cadbury products being eaten in the royal household has gone down in recent years.

A spokesperson for Cadbury told the Daily Mail: "Ours is a much-loved brand that has been a part of British life for generations and remains the nation’s favourite chocolate. 

"While we are disappointed to be one of hundreds of other businesses and brands in the UK not to have a new warrant awarded, we are proud to have previously held one and we fully respect the decision."
