Man refuses to give up plane seat so husband can sit next to wife on birthday

‘I’m sick of people asking to switch seats. Book the right seat first’

A business class flyer has reignited the cabin etiquette debate, but this time he wasn’t the one refusing to move – someone wouldn’t move for him.

Jay Kloss wanted to sit by his wife, Zoe, but a passenger wouldn’t change seats for him.

The Melbourne couple were separated in the business class section of a Virgin flight after being unable to book two adjoining seats.

Zoe was sat next to the window, while Jay was sat on the aisle in the same row, but on the opposite side of the plane.

In a TikTok video, where all such grievances are aired, with the caption,  ‘Am I in the wrong’, Jay explained how he approached the traveller sitting next to his partner, to see if he’s swap.

It was Zoe’s birthday. They wanted to sit together.

Jay asked: “Hey, would you mind moving so I could sit with my missus? It’s her birthday.”

The passenger, Jay said, didn’t even acknowledge the request:  “And he just looks at me, he doesn’t respond.

“I was like, ‘Is it possible if you switch to here?’

“He was like, ‘No, I won’t, but I’ll sit here (Zoe’s window seat).”

Jay went on to explain how Zoe “isn’t a great flyer” and can get “super nauseous” so always needs to sit near a window, so it wasn’t really an option for her to move towards where he was sitting.

However, if the passenger he approached swapped seats, he’s still effectively be getting the same seat on the plane, an exasperated Jay explained: “Either way, he’s either getting the exact same spot (but) just on the other side of the aisle. But he won’t take that, he’s like, ‘Nah, I’ll only move to here (Zoe’s window seat).

“So, he’ll make us sit on either side of the aisle, just for no reason.

“It’s the same seat so anyway, I’m like, ‘Bro, really? You sure you can’t swap seats with us?’ And he just doesn’t respond to me.”

Jay said Zoe then pleaded with the man: “Zoe says: ‘Hey, excuse me, is it possible for us to switch seats, is there some sort of problem? It’s my birthday today, I’d like to sit with my partner’.

“And he’s like, ‘Nah, no problem, just not moving’.’

“Like what the f**k? Am I missing something? Can somebody explain to me, what the hell is going on here? It’s the same seat, just on a different side of the aisle.”

The standoff did, however, have a happy ending as eventually, a passenger in the window seat next to Jay offered to swap with Zoe so she’d still be able to get a window seat.

Regardless, Jay was fuming all flight and said he wanted to “slap” the passenger who wouldn’t oblige his request.

As has been the case with most of these stories, people have backed the man refusing to move. A seat is a seat.

One person wrote in the comments: “No, the dude didn’t have to give up his seat, even if it was the nice thing to do.”

Another echoed the sentiment, telling Jay to release the cabin pressure on the conflict: “Just gotta deal with people answering Y or N. Can’t expect it to be Y.”

Another person was more blunt: “You’re in the wrong, should have booked seats together in the first place.”

“Bro, I’m sick of people asking to switch seats. Book the right seat first,” said another commenter.
