Fans demand answer to fishing trip mystery in last ever Gavin and Stacey

Ryan Price

It’s the mystery that has puzzled lovers of the show for over a decade.

There was big news in the world of television this morning as Gavin and Stacey creators James Corden and Ruth Jones confirmed that the series finale will air this Christmas.

Corden and Jones shared an Instagram post together along with the caption: “Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James.”

Speculation about a special has been doing the rounds in recent months although many of the cast members played down the reports, suggesting that they were hopeful of there being one rather than already knowing it was happening.

Gavin and Stacey is one of the most well-known and loved sitcoms and fans will be desperate to know the outcome of the cliff-hanger the last special ended on.

In the last Christmas edition, almost five years ago, we were left on the edge of our seats after Nessa (Jones) proposed to Smithy (Corden).

Details of the plot for this year’s special are yet to be revealed however filming is expected to take place in the summer and we’re sure it will end in style.

One long-running secret that fans will be hoping to finally have disclosed to them when the series wraps up later this year is the one that uncle Bryn shares with his nephew Jason surrounding a traumatic fishing trip.

Time and time again the pair have awkwardly stumbled around the incident, and have left fans guessing as to what actually happened on that night many years ago.

One frequent theory comes from an exchange between the two at Gavin and Stacey’s wedding reception in season one.

Jason and Bryn meet outside the venue and attempt to clear the air. Jason says: “I never told anyone, you know. And besides, it wasn’t a big deal. Lots of people do it, it’s not against the law.”

Bryn replies: “Jason please, how can I ever forget that look on your face?”

This short interaction suggests that perhaps Jason simply walked in on Bryn at a private moment, more than enough to cause serious awkwardness between an uncle and his nephew.

It seems series creators Jones and Corden know just how much viewers want full details of the fishing trip, and teased the entire nation with the 2019 Christmas special. When the topic of the troubling trip came up, it seemed Bryn and Jason were finally ready to tell the whole family what really happened – only to be interrupted when the kids ran in.

However, we did get a few more details – Bryn said: “It was very dark, in every sense of the word.”

Jason replied: “And can I just point out that we knew nothing about camping.”

When Jason begins to take responsibility for the incident, Bryn steps in claiming the blame belongs to him – again suggesting both were actively involved in the mysterious encounter.

If anything, the references to the infamous trip have only served to amplify the ambiguity around it.

Following the announcement that the last ever episode of the much-loved show will hit our screens this Christmas, fans will be hoping that what really happened will finally get revealed, so that Bryn, Jason and the rest of us can move on with our lives.
