Their story drew attention after being featured on an episode of ’24 Hours in Police Custody’
A couple have closed a GoFundMe page set up for them after more than £170,000 was raised for the husband who was jailed for chasing two would-be burglars away from his home.
Adam White, from Eggington, Bedfordshire, was the subject of an episode of Channel 4 show 24 Hours in Police Custody which told how two burglars targeted the home he shares with his wife, Lindsay, 34, and children aged 8 and 10.
The burglars, Taylor Benford and Ryan Paul, both 25, fled White’s house with a stolen motorbike, with White giving chase in his car.
On the programme, the 34-year-old dad-of-two described how he “didn’t realise how sharp” a bend in the road was and ploughed into the two motorbikes, causing serious injuries to the burglars.
Bodycam footage showed White getting arrested by police officers and asking them: “Am I in trouble? I’m not going to prison for this am I?”
In February, White he was sentenced to 22 months imprisonment for causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Luton Crown Court. He also spent £50,000, via credit cards, savings and loans to cover his legal fees.
Benford and Paul both escaped jail time, receiving suspended sentences and 200 hours of community service each.
White was released in September and is now required to wear an ankle bracelet, Bedfordshire Live reports.
But his story only appeared on Channel 4 on Monday, prompting an outpouring of support and one viewer to set up the GoFundMe page.
Last week, the couple shared a video thanking everyone for the support after the amount raised for them surpassed £151,000.
Now, they have decided to close the page, announcing that the amount raised is “more than enough to help ourselves recover our losses.”
The couple added that they would be contributing a “significant amount to a number of charity organisations” as well.
We hope everyone has an amazing Christmas and New Year. Thank you, everyone, from the bottom of our hearts.
We have now requested the go-fund me to close and Lindsay has made a message below ❤️🎄❤️ pic.twitter.com/xkD1WErlau— Adam White (@WhitePropertyS1) December 6, 2022
The GoFundMe, ‘Give Adam White justice’, reads: “He was put away for 22 months for knocking them off their stole bike, and they got zero prison time.
“He spent £50k of his life savings. Let’s get it back to him!! ”
“I have been in touch with Adam’s wife, Lindsay, who will be transferring the funds directly from the fundraiser. Thank you for all the support so far.”
The page was updated on Thursday (December 1) by Lindsay, who wrote that the family had been “overwhelmed with the support that everyone has given us.”
Speaking to the Mirror, White revealed that following his arrest he lost his data centre job.
He also told how his wife, who was pregnant at the time, made the heartbreaking decision to have an abortion because she was struggling to cope with the stress of the case.
The fury at White’s conviction was so severe after the airing of the Channel 4 show that Bedfordshire Police released a video statement regarding it.
