‘Try and avoid these at all costs’

A doctor has spoken out about just how dangerous Elf bars are while also revealing how many cigarettes they are the equivalent to – and it turns out, it’s a lot.

While Elf bars and vapes of a similar ilk are often marketed as healthier alternatives to smoking, the reality could not be more different. Stories of lungs collapsing and sudden deaths are prevalent on social media but there is also a massive amount of misinformation circling – with the most notable suggesting that they are harmless.

Packaged in bright vibrant colours, Elf bars come in an array of fun flavours, including Apple Peach, Blue Razz Lemonade, Cherry Cola and Lemon Tar. With 33 flavours and counting, there is a flavour to entice just about anyone, which is exactly the point.

In his video captioned “don’t do it”, Dr Onkar Mudhar revealed that one full bar is the “equivalent to about 48 to 50 cigarettes.

“Not only is nicotine in these devices super addictive, it also puts you at risk of developing gum disease, dry mouth, tooth decay and early tooth loss,” he explained. “Furthermore, they can also cause bad breath. So try and avoid these at all costs.”

Elf Bars contain 20mg of nicotine, which, as IndeJuice explains, is “intended for those that want to switch from smoking traditional cigarettes, providing you with an instant nicotine hit.”

“There is limited scientific evidence regarding these products, mainly regarding the liquid used to vape with rather than the vaping device itself as they have continued to change over the last ten years,” Dr Gareth Nye from the University of Chester told The Tab.

“Vaping has caused increases in tooth decay, dental and oral conditions and shows signs of being linked to oral cancers the same way cigarette smoking does.”

He concluded: “Bottom line – inhaling chemicals into the lungs which are not meant to be there leads to a reaction from your immune system which damages the lung tissue.”
