Movie fans think ‘there’s nothing scarier’ than ‘perfect’ John Cusack horror film

Joseph Loftus

‘It’s a masterpiece’

Movie fans are absolutely raving about one of John Cusack’s horror films labelling it perfect, terrifying, and above all, a masterpiece.

The movie, 1408, stars Cusack as the central character, a paranormal writer, who specialises in debunking the paranormal. However, as this is a horror film, when he goes to check out a haunted hotel room, the writer is suddenly face-to-face with real terror.

The official plot to 1408 goes as follows: “The cynical and skeptical writer Mike Enslin writes books evaluating supernatural phenomena in hotels, graveyards and other haunted places, usually debunking the mystery.

“While writing his latest book, he travels from Los Angeles to New York to spend one night in the Dolphin Hotel’s possessed room 1408, which is permanently unavailable for guests.

“The reluctant manager Mr. Gerald Olin objects to his request to stay in the room and offers an upgrade.

“However Mike threatens Mr. Olin, promising to sue the hotel, and is finally allowed to check into the room. Later in the night, he finds that guests of room 1408, once they have checked in, might never leave the room alive.”

Despite first being released in 2007, fans are still raving about the movie with one writing on Rotten Tomatoes: “In my opinion. John Cusack did a phenomenal job. It was a perfect horror movie. His character was relatable because he sought out horror but was skeptical just like us.

“We know things don’t actually go bump in the night, but a small part of us want to be proven wrong.

“It took place in universally relatable setting. A hotel room. It’s alien because it’s not our home, but it’s relatable in that we’ve all been in one. I never found horror movies with aliens scary because I can’t really conceptualise ever being in the predicament. That’s where 1408 nails it.

“[…] But the absolute BEST thing it did and the story one theme no other horror trope can ever beat is no longer being able to trust your own mind. There is nothing scarier. “

Another viewer wrote: “One of the best Stephen king adaptations that gets too little recognition. Captured what’s good about King’s stories while adding to it in a great way. In the short story, the phone scene and the interview are easily the best parts. In the movie there’s so much more.”

And a third concluded: “Room 1408 was a MASTERPIECE and true horror.”
