The Odyssey Box Office Hits $1.35bn to Set an All-Time R-Rated Record

Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic is officially the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made. Universal Pictures confirmed on Thursday that The Odyssey box office haul has reached $1.352 billion worldwide, Variety reported, edging past the $1.338 billion collected by Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine after its July 2024 release. That record had stood for two years. It has now fallen to an adaptation of Homer.

Released on 17 July, the film has taken $516.3 million of that total in North America. It was the first narrative feature to be shot entirely on Imax film cameras, and had already set the record for the biggest Imax release of all time.

What the Odyssey box office record means for Nolan

Earlier this month the film overtook The Dark Knight Rises to become Nolan’s highest-grossing release worldwide, a milestone The Hollywood Reporter reported at the time. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson, it is also the biggest global earner of Damon’s, Hathaway’s and Pattinson’s careers.

Ryan Reynolds, whose Deadpool has surrendered the crown, took it in characteristic style, posting clips of Deadpool brawling with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine inside a Honda Odyssey minivan:

Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car.

The voyage is not over yet. Having already sailed past The Odyssey’s earlier box office milestones, Nolan’s epic is still in cinemas while Spider-Man: Brand New Day leads the late-summer schedule.
