Another record for the Nolan film

The mythological epic film by Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey, is now officially the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made, according to reports.

On Thursday, Universal Pictures confirmed that The Odyssey box office haul has reached $1.352 billion worldwide.

Variety reported that this edged past the $1.338 billion collected by Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine after its July 2024 release.

While that record had stood for two years, it has now fallen to an adaptation of Homer.

The Odyssey, which was released on 17 July, has taken $516.3 million of that total in North America.

The film made history as the first narrative feature to be shot entirely on Imax film cameras.

It had already set the record for the biggest Imax release of all time.

What the Odyssey box office record means for Nolan

The film overtook The Dark Knight Rises to become Nolan’s highest-grossing release worldwide, earlier this month.

As per The Hollywood Reporter this was a milestone for the British-American director.

The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson.

It is also the biggest global earner of Damon’s, Hathaway’s and Pattinson’s careers.

Ryan Reynolds, whose Deadpool has surrendered the crown, took it in characteristic style, posting clips of Deadpool brawling with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine inside a Honda Odyssey minivan:

"Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car", he said.

Having already sailed past The Odyssey’s earlier box office milestones, Nolan’s epic is still in cinemas while Spider-Man: Brand New Day leads the late-summer schedule.
