The Marvel sequel, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, is now only the second film ever to open above $300 million.

The record edges out Endgame, which launched to $357 million back in 2019, and the two superhero blockbusters remain the only films to clear $300 million in their debut weekends.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day marks the latest chapter of Tom Holland as the web-slinger, and its opening haul underlines Marvel’s enduring pull at the box office more than a decade on from the studio’s first record run.

Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo took to Instagram to congratulate the team, declaring that “the gauntlet has been passed”.

A new benchmark for Spider-Man

The milestone caps a remarkable box office comeback for the character and sets an intimidating target for the next wave of comic-book releases, Variety reported.

With word of mouth still building and the summer schedule thinning out, attention now turns to how long Brand New Day can cling to the top of the charts.
