Deadpool 3 writers reveal whether working with Disney will make the character more family friendly

Will Disney finally silence the Merc with the mouth?

The writers of Deadpool 3 have spoken out as to whether the ‘merc with the mouth’ joining the Disney-owned Marvel Studios will force the character to become more family friendly moving forward.

Ever since it was revealed that Disney had acquired 20th Century Fox – the same studio that brought irreverent 2016 hit Deadpool and its 2018 sequel to screens – fans were wondering whether Ryan Reynolds’ foul mouthed mercenary would have to become a little tamer due to the wholesome ethos championed at the House of Mouse.

Shortly after the move was announced back in 2017, Reynolds was quick to make a joke about Deadpool and Disney’s odd-couple aesthetic by sharing a picture of the character getting escorted out of Disneyland.

Now in a new interview with movie outlet Den of Geek, writers of part one and two of the Deadpool series Rhett Reece and Paul Wernick have shed some light on what we can expect from Reynolds’ red-suited, fourth-wall-breaking and very sweary hero in the franchise’s hotly anticipated third instalment.

Thankfully, it looks like it’ll be business as usual for Mr Pool.

“It’s a thrill,” said Reece, speaking about the character finally entering Marvel’s cinematic universe. ““It’s an absolute thrill to have the band back together, to have a new backdrop in the MCU with new characters, new villains, that kind of thing.

“You know, it’s never a marriage we necessarily saw coming — Fox and Disney, that was an external thing [separate] from our storytelling process. But we’re absolutely finding the serendipity and the gold in that situation, or we’re trying to.”

Commenting on how the tone of the character might be impacted, Wernick assured fans that “Deadpool is gonna be Deadpool”.

He added: “They’ve been very supportive with regard to that.

“Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success.

“So hopefully it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”

Reynolds will reteam with his Free Guy and The Adam Project director Shawn Levy for Deadpool 3 which is yet to secure an official release date.
