When aren’t they angry though?
Manchester United have been deemed as the angriest fanbase over VAR calls in the Premier League this season, according to science.
Research conduced by Tombola, analysing tweets including certain hashtags, showed that United fans were left less than impressed with some of the decisions in their games, after almost 11,000 football team-related tweets were analysed across the course of the 2022/23 campaign.
Man United were the most negative fanbase when it came to tweets about VAR
According to the results, United were the most negative team when it came to moaning about VAR, tweeting 870 times across a nine-month period whereas Brentford were the least negative with just 25 tweets against the system.
United supporters were also the most active supporters on Twitter when it came to both positive and negative VAR comments with a total of 2,164 tweets.
This is somewhat obvious, given an estimated nine per cent of the world’s population support the Red Devils, but considering how angry they seem to be all the time, it’s no surprise to see them top the list.
Newcastle United came second in the table, with most of their negative VAR tweets being posted during their 1-0 defeat against Chelsea back in March, when supporters were angered that Kai Havertz didn’t receive a red card for a late challenge on Dan Burn.

Fans believe VAR has taken the enjoyment out of the match day experience
Meanwhile in a survey of more than 33,000 people conducted by the Football Supporters’ Association, it was revealed that 40 per cent of fans will not watch live football because of the impact of VAR on the game.
The survey also added that 95 per cent of fans who had experienced the use of VAR in stadiums and 94 per cent who had watched games on TV including VAR said it made their match day experience less enjoyable.
