As reported by the BBC, the current German chancellor Angela Merkel and her impending replacement, Olaf Scholz agreed with leaders of the 16 separate states in the country that several measures would be put in place, following a rapid rise in the number of coronavirus cases.

Restrictions include a reduction in capacity on indoor and outdoor sporting events and now requires those who attend to wear masks.

The government have also called for for leaders to cancel sporting events altogether in states where the number of cases are particularly high.

For the large parts of this season, clubs in the Bundesliga have been operating at near-full capacity stadiums and the chief executive of the German Football League (DFL), Christian Seifert agreed with a temporary reduction in crowd sizes.

He said: "A temporary limit on the number of fans in the stadium is understandable.

"The DFL hopes that this decision by the federal government and the states leads to an improvement of the pandemic situation."

It comes after the state of Bavaria - where champions Bayern Munich play, announced earlier this week that they wouldn't hesitate to impose restrictions regardless of the government's final outcome and called for games to be played behind closed doors.

Meanwhile Borussia Dortmund cancelled 67,000 tickets supporters had for their game against Bayern this weekend whilst Manchester City will face RB Leipzig in the Champions League without any fans as Saxony installed it's own restrictions after it became one of the highest-infected areas in Germany.
