Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson told Sky News that the plans aren't complete but will mean the president meets the Queen.
Kay Burley asked whether the itinerary included a meeting with Her Majesty.
He said: "Yes, yes, I mean he has to see the head of state. Putting his foot on British soil, it's job one, it's very important, very symbolic.
"Meeting Her Majesty is the most important thing, because she's the head of state, and from then on, it'll be what the president wants to do."
After it was revealed children were being separated from their parents in immigrant detention centres, the American president has succumbed to national outrage and signed an executive order banning the practice today.
