‘The Teletubbies sun baby is having her own sun baby’

The ‘sun baby’ from the Teletubbies is set to become a mum.

While Tinky Winky, Laa Laa, Dipsy and Po were the stars of the TV show that many people grew up on, the ‘sun baby’ – a giggly, bodiless, baby that appears inside the blazing, yellow sun – features in most episodes.

The Teletubbies said ‘Eh-Oh” on telly for the first time on 31 March 1997 and after 365 episodes, ended in 2001, before being re-booted in 2014.

Rather than being artificially generated, the ‘sun baby’ was in fact, a baby. Well, she was once. Now she’s an adult about to become a mum.

Jessica Smith, who is now thought to be in her 20s, played the part until 2015 when the re-boot came out with a new sun baby.

Smith announced the happy news on Instagram earlier this week and shared a picture of her sonogram images.

In the caption, Smith wrote: “When two becomes three”.

Teletubbies fans were quick to comment: “The Teletubbies sun baby is having her own sun baby,” and: “Congratulations! You’re gonna have your own sun baby!!!”

Smith previously revealed how she’d sometimes try to hide her early stardom from the world but decided to come clean about it.

She wrote on social media: “I’ve decided it’s time to tell everyone.

“I used to hide it but after a lot of encouragement from my friends at university, I’ve gained the confidence to come out with it.

“I am the sun from Teletubbies.

“There have been quite a few people pretending to be the sun but only I could tell you the real story.”

Smith claimed she was taken to hospital for a check-up when she was little and on the same day a producer for the show was searching for “smiley babies.” And she fit the bill.

Talking about the show, Smith added:“While recording my dad held a teddy bear behind the camera to get me to laugh and rolled a toy racing car to get me to look down at the camera, and it obviously worked.”
