Prime Video's British supernatural thriller series The Rig has been cancelled after two seasons, according to its star Emily Hampshire (Schitt's Creek, WandaVision).
Having premiered in 2023, the show followed the crew of a Scottish oil rig in the North Sea. When a strange fog cuts off all communication with the shore, they are left stranded amidst the fierce waves of the North Sea, fighting for survival.
Hampshire played the oil company's representative and scientist, while members of the rig's crew were played by Iain Glen (Silo), Martin Compston (Line of Duty), and Mark Bonnar (Dept Q).
This week, JOE spoke to Hampshire about her scene-stealing turn in the newly released Marvel series VisionQuest. She plays E.D.I.T.H., a thrill-seeking AI created by Tony Stark that now serves as a companion to Vision (played by Paul Bettany).
During our chat with the Canadian actress, best known for her roles in the shows 12 Monkeys and Schitt's Creek, we asked if she had ever spent time in Ireland. We noted that The Rig was filmed in the nearby country of Scotland.
In response, she said: "I haven't, and I'm dying to. Because it is so close to Edinburgh... I worked in Edinburgh for a long time and then [having worked] with UK actors in London... I'm Canadian, and I feel there is this similarity [to Irish people] in that if I make fun of you, it's because I like you.
"That is something I feel like immediately bonds me with anybody from the UK, because it's so different. American actors really, a lot of the time, take themselves very seriously, which I'm not saying is bad. I'm just saying I can't do that."
Following on from this, we asked Hampshire if The Rig would be returning for a third season. The second batch of episodes premiered in January 2025.
Up until now, there had been no word on a S3, despite many people calling for it online.
When we mentioned this to Hampshire, she responded: "Oh, really? Oh, I wish more people would, because, yeah, sadly there isn't.
"We were hoping for one, and we definitely left it open-ended for one.
"I love that you even know [about it]… I feel like not that many people knew it.
"But God, I loved working on that show. I loved Ian and Martin, and it was really fun."
