Sequel to Winnie the Pooh horror film debuts with perfect Rotten Tomatoes score

Nina McLaughlin

Well, that was unexpected

The new Winnie the Pooh horror flick, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, has debuted with an unbelievable score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Although the first film in the franchise, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, was widely panned by critics and viewers alike, it seems the second one has received a much more positive reception.

Based on A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard’s Winnie-the-Pooh books, the horror films take the children’s classic down a rather twisted route.

The first movie received a whopping five Razzie awards, which is not a good thing, and even claimed the top (or, well, bottom) prize of Worst Picture of 2024.

Although some of the negativity surrounding the film was definitely a result of the controversial horror take on the beloved children’s story, it has a score of just three percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty darn awful.

However, the second instalment of the indie horror, which sees the return of Rhys Frake-Waterfield as director, has got critics in a frenzy.

Based on the first six reviews, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 has a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 100 percent.

Luke Y. Thompson of the AV Club wrote in his review: “This is cinema at its most punk rock—a raucous, unpolished, cheap, sacred-cow shredding middle finger to the mainstream with just enough raw talent inside to keep it from being dismissable.”

SciFiNow’s Anton Biel wrote: “Grotesque and portentous and silly… A considerable improvement on the original film, with lost, damaged childhood always lying at its very heart, and trauma never truly dead and buried.”

While 3C Films’ Chris Parker said: “This sequel greatly improves over the first by not only leaning into the absurd but also expanding the mythology in fun ways. I’m actually curious now to see where this crazy Cinematic Universe goes.”

If you want to go and see what all the fuss is about for yourself, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 releases in UK cinemas today, March 26.
