PlayStation Plus quietly adds brand new game to catalogue

The game had its worldwide release this week

A brand new game has dropped on PlayStation Plus on the same day it had its worldwide release.

PlayStation fans reading this will no doubt be very familiar with how PS Plus releases usually work.

Most of the time, Sony will add new titles to the platform in one go at the midway point of each month.

However, this month a game has been launched on PS Plus separate from the mid-month arrivals so that it coincides with its global release.

Yesterday (April 23), Tales of Kenzera: Zau, a new release from EA and developer Surgent Studios, dropped on the platform for Extra and Premium tier subscribers to enjoy.

The game is a Metroidvania title that was initially announced at the end of 2023, and Sony revealed earlier this month that it would be hitting PS Plus on the same day as its global release on April 23.

It sounds like it might be worth giving a go as well, the game currently holding a Metacritic rating of 76.

You can watch the Tales of Kenzera: Zau trailer below.

The synopsis for the game reads: “A grieving boy begins to read a Bantu tale written by his late father. Adventure into the beautiful and treacherous lands of Kenzera as Zau, a young shaman who bargains with the God of death to bring his Baba back from darkness.

“With your cosmic powers and untried courage, you advance into unknown mythological lands. Once bursting with life, Kenzera is now rife with lost ancestral spirits. As Zau advances toward his goal, three mighty beings lie in wait, fearsome in their strength yet somehow strangely familiar. Will you embrace the dance of the shaman?”

Tales of Kenzera has an interesting back story too, having been developed by actor Abubakar Salim, who is set to star in the upcoming season of House of the Dragon.

Salim came up with the idea for the game following his own experience of grief after the death of his father.

The “poignant single-player story” explores how “love gives us the courage to press on after devastating loss.”

Players will “wield powers from the Sun and the Moon to defeat restless spirits in rhythmic combat and become a worthy Nganga: a spiritual healer” whilst discovering a “rich universe with untold lore of chaos and order.”

Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is available to play now for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers or can be purchased here.
