GMB’s Ranvir Singh blasted over ‘disrespectful’ Sam Smith blunder

Steve Hopkins

‘It really isn’t hard to use Sam’s preferred and correct pronouns ffs’

Ranvir Singh has been slammed as “disrespectful” after using the wrong pronouns for Sam Smith when discussing the performer’s BRIT awards outfit on ITV Good Morning Britain on Monday.

The presenter, who was on Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, misgendered the singer who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, following in the clumsy footprints of Richard Madeley who did it late last month.

The designer behind Sam’s BRIT Awards outfit – a black latex, balloon-like number featuring a high neck, sleeves and legs which appeared to be inflated, paired with heeled boots and a pair of tiny earrings – appeared on the show on Monday.

The outfit was designed by London-based fashion label Harri, founded by London College of Fashion MA Fashion graduate Harikrishnan Keezhathil Surendran Pillai.

Harri talked presenters’, judge Robert Rinder, and Ranvir, through Smith’s look for Saturday’s awards ceremony.

Along with this, Smith wore a pair of heeled boots and a pair of tiny earrings as they posed for photographs on the red carpet before making their way into the main arena area.

Harri said: “It was in 2020, I started designing these inflatable trousers, I starting thinking about it from my dog’s point of view… I have a small dog, yes. I was thinking about his point of view and seeing me with a distorted image, from a low angle. Then I started.”

Ranvir branded it “artwork” – but landed herself in hot water when she misgendered the singer.

“Next up on ITV Good Morning Britain today, Harry Styles may have swept the board at the BRIT Awards this weekend but it was Sam Smith who stole the show with this dramatic latex balloon-like bodysuit.

“How did he get in it? Who designed it? And why did he…. they, why did they choose it? We will find out from the designer who designed that costume outfit and the designer is bringing along one of his iconic designs. Rob, you may have to potentially get in it.”

According to reports, after making the gaffe, and a subsequent correction, a co-star or crew member was heard sighing in the background.

The singer is known for their boundary-breaking looks and performances, like last week’s ‘Unholy’ Grammy show.

One GMB viewer asked on Twitter: “@gmb @ranvir didn’t you brief correctly about pronouns to be used with Sam Smith?”

Another added: “Ranvir, it really isn’t hard to use Sam’s preferred and correct pronouns ffs.”

And a third wrote:”Ranvir forgetting to call Sam Smith ‘they’.” Harry wrote: “Disrespectful.”
