The performance was branded ‘devil worshipping’
Sam Smith and Kim Petras Grammy performance of their award-winning single, Unholy, has been slammed as “literally a tribute to satan”.
The pair, who on Sunday took home the award for Best Pop/Duo/Group Performance, making Petra the first trans woman to win in the category, have been accused of “devil worshipping” for a performance than saw Smith wear satanic headgear and appear to be worshipped.
One frustrated Grammys viewer tweeted: “I know we on the right probably use the word satanic too often but this performance from Sam Smith is literally a tribute to Satan.”
Another added, “you don’t have to be super religious to be disturbed by that Sam Smith devil-worshiping performance”, why a third questioned why artists are “so obsessed with the devil?”
One viewer said the “devil worshipping performance was trash” and the theme had been done “so many times”.
Grammy’s host Trevor Noah made a joke about the obvious backlash that was set to follow, by pretending to be on the phone to his mother, saying: “No, mom, it wasn’t the actual devil… Yeah, you did warn me about Hollywood.”
After ending the pretend call, Noah told the star-studded crowd, that his mother said “she’s praying for all of us”.

The first part of Unholy is about a man who is cheating on his wife by doing ‘something unholy’, while Petras’ part looks at a woman who just uses a man for his money. The music video has also been criticised for its use of lustful dancers and sexual imagery.
Earlier in the night, Petras made history as the first transgender woman to win the Grammy for Best Pop/Group performance.
Petras and Smith won the award for their track ‘Unholy’, which was up against ABBA, Coldplay and BTS, as well as duos Post Malone and Doja Cat, and Camila Cabello and Ed Sheeran.
Accepting the award, Petras said: “Sam (Smith) graciously wanted me to accept this award because I am the first transgender woman to win this award.”
