Sam Smith Brit Awards

Safe to say, there was no risk of anyone wearing the same thing

Sam Smith caught the attention of many at the BRIT Awards on Saturday night with his choice of red carpet attire, wearing a black latex, balloon-like outfit.

The singer was nominated for two awards at this year’s awards, for Best Pop/R&B Act and a second for Song Of The Year for their hit Unholy featuring Kim Petras.

They’ve had plenty of attention in recent weeks following the release of ‘Unholy’ and in particular the music video, which some have taken issue with for apparently being overly-sexual.

Meanwhile, last month Smith – who identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them – said they have learned to love their body and now has the “opposite of body dysmorphia.”

The star was full of confidence on the red carpet ahead of the Brits, wearing an eye-catching  latex outfit which featured a rather high neck, sleeves and legs which appeared to be overinflated and a zip going up the front of his all-in-one look.

Along with this, Smith wore a pair of heeled boots and a pair of tiny earrings as they posed for photographs on the red carpet before making their way into the main arena area.

The outfit caused plenty of conversation online. Whilst some wondered if it was a tribute to the David Bowie, others reckoned Smith looked more like a spatchcock chicken.

Later in the night, they took to the stage to perform ‘Unholy’ along with Petras.

In terms of the awards, it was Harry Styles who owned the night, sweeping up four Brits.

The former One Direction member won Song of the Year, Best Pop/R&B Act, Artist of the Year and the night’s biggest award, Album of the Year.

The Artist of the Year category had caused controversy this year because of its all-male nominee list. As he collected the award, Styles named the women who had missed out on being nominated in the category.

He told the crowd: “I’m very aware of my privilege up here tonight, so this award is for Rina [Sawayama], Charli [XCX], Florence, Mabel and Becky [Hill], thank you so much.”
