The film first went viral on TikTok back in 2020

The director of controversial horror film Megan is Missing has spoken out after it gained popularity on TikTok.

Megan is Missing was released back in 2011, but only recently gained popularity after the internet learned of its existence on the popular video-sharing app.

The film follows the story of Megan Stewart (Rachel Quinn) and Amy Herman (Amber Perkins), 14-year-old best friends who are living in North Hollywood.

However, when Megan goes missing after meeting up with someone she had been talking to online, their lives are thrown into chaos.

It was banned in New Zealand due to its graphic content, with the Office of Film & Literature Classification saying the film is “classified as objectionable.”

They added: “The feature depicts sexual violence and sexual conduct involving young people to such an extent and degree, and in such a manner, that the availability of the publication is likely to be injurious to the public good.”

Following the film blowing up on social media in 2020, its director Michael Goi issued a warning to potential viewers.

“I didn’t get to give you the customary warnings that I used to give people before they watched Megan Is Missing,” he said.

“They are: do not watch the movie in the middle of the night, do not watch the movie alone, and if you see the words ‘Photo Number one’ pop up on your screen, you have about four seconds to shut off the movie, if you’re already freaking out before you start seeing things that maybe you don’t want to see.”

Social media users echoed this sentiment.

“If you are easily triggered or under 18 please watch it during the day or with someone…or both,” one person wrote.

A second put: “Oml this traumatized me.”
