‘Facebook has been tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible’

The writer of The Social Network has hinted that he is writing a sequel about Facebook’s influence on society.

Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay for the acclaimed biographical drama, which portrays the founding of Facebook.

The 2010 movie sees Jesse Eisenberg play the role of Mark Zuckerberg, with Andrew Garfield starring as Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and Justin Timberlake as Napster creator Sean Parker.

Appearing on recent episode of podcast The Town, Sorkin was asked about Facebook’s role in spreading “divisive material” and its influence in the January 6 Capitol riots.

After saying he “blames Facebook for January 6”, Sorkin was asked what he would do to tackle the link between the social media platform and Trump’s supporters.

He replied: “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.”

Sorkin explained that he thinks the social media platform is having a bad influence on society because it promotes “the most divisive material possible.”

“Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible, because that is what will increase engagement,” he said.

“That is what will get you to, what they call inside the hallways of Facebook, ‘the infinite scroll.’

“There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t; there’s just growth.”

The Social Network was a success with audiences and critics alike following its release, grossing over $224m worldwide and winning several Oscars including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin.
