Adele says we've been pronouncing her name wrong

There’s a subtle but crucial difference…

Adele has said that the vast majority of us have been pronouncing her name wrong all her life, and revealed how it should be said.

The 34-year-old ‘Hello’ singer was speaking at the afterparty for the launch of her new music video for ‘I Drink Wine’ and taking questions from fans.

One fan sent in a video clip question, in which she said: “Hi Adele, I’m Annie and I’m from London, and my question is, ‘On your journey to self love while writing 30, did your perspective on how you saw yourself when you wrote 25 change at all, and how?”

But before she addressed the deeper subject matter of the question, Adele wanted to thank Annie for something.

“Where’s she from, Enfield or something? Love that,” Adele asked during the chat. “She said my name perfectly,” the singer added with a smile, noting that she’d had a discussion with chat’s host earlier about how her name should be pronounced.

“He came and asked me how I say my name and I said ‘Uh-del.’”

It’s a subtle difference, but basically it’s all about putting the emphasis on the second syllable in her name.

Going on to answer Annie’s question, the singer said that, in stark contrast to when she was writing 25, she “didn’t rate herself as a human being” when writing 30.

In the buildup to writing 30, Adele divorced from her partner of eight years, with whom she shares a son, 10-year-old Angelo.

Speaking to Rolling Stone about the separation, Adele said: “It made me really sad. Then having so many people that I don’t know know that I didn’t make that work… it f**king devastated me.

“I was embarrassed. No one made me feel embarrassed, but you feel like you didn’t do a good job.”

The album was a huge success though, going to number one in the UK and becoming the biggest selling album of 2021.
