Man who farted in police officer's face jailed for 34 months

He stole booze and some vape products

A man who farted in the face of a police officer has been served a 34-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to an array of criminal charges. Matthew Hapgood was arrested on March 21, at which point he chose to fart directly into the arresting officer's face. He'd been caught with £33-worth of beer and cider from Tesco and a handful of vape products from a nearby garage. On August 26, the court heard how Hapgood "broke wind in the officer's face during the course of that arrest." He subsequently pleaded guilty to robbery, shoplifting, possession of a bladed article and criminal damage at Oxford Crown Court. Throughout the hearing, Judge Ian Pringle QC told the court how Hapgood has a "lengthy" history with crime, totalling a staggering 83 offences. "You have a lengthy history, no less than 31 previous convictions for 83 offences, all really to do with a drug or alcohol addiction which has been with you for most of your adult life," he explained. Back in 2019, police in Aberdeen, Scotland, found themselves in a similar situation with Stuart Cook, who had been arrested for the possession of cannabis. A small amount of weed was discovered, at which point Cook "screamed expletives" and "puffed out his chest towards officers" as he was being driven to the police station, reported the Mirror. It was later revealed at a hearing that Cook "deliberately farted in the direction of the officer three times, stating, 'how do you like that?'"
