Brazil could win a sixth World Cup in Qatar
A family from Brazil who have six digits on their hand are living in hope that they can count the number of World Cup wins on one hand by the end of the tournament.
The da Silva family – who are nicknamed the ‘Family six’ – have six digits on their hands, and sometimes feet, and are supporting their nation all the way.
Brazil are the most successful nation in World Cup history having won the competition five times (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002).
‘Family Six’ have a rare genetic variation known as polydactyly and it has reportedly been in their family for the past four generations.
Silvia Santos da Silva, who is a member of the family, explained how the trait was passed down from her maternal grandmother.
“When a baby is born, we immediately ask if it’s going to have five or six fingers, because six is right for us.
“People, initially, don’t ask so many questions because they think we’re ashamed of having six fingers. But, after they get to know us, they realise that this for us is more natural than anything.”
Maria Morena, another member of the family, is confident of Brazil bringing the World Cup back to South America and jokingly said: “For the next World Cup, you will have to find someone with seven fingers.”
Their ambitions of watching their nation being crowned champions for a sixth time moved another step closer after Brazil comfortably beat South Korea 4-1 on Monday night.
Four first half goals from Vinicius Jr, Neymar, Richarlison and Lucas Paqueta pretty much ensured their place in the last eight with another 45 minutes to spare.
Seung-Ho Paik scored a consolation for South Korea 12 minutes from time but it wasn’t enough to dampen spirits as Tite’s side danced their way into the quarter finals, where they will face 2018 finalists Croatia.
