‘The subsequent level of abuse is completely unacceptable’

Chelsea have defended Conor Gallagher after the midfielder was on heavily criticised for appearing to ignore a mascot before Saturday’s game.

Gallagher, who was captaining Chelsea in their 2-2 draw against Burnley, was lining up to lead the side.

As he did so, two mascots were there waiting and shook one of their hands while he tapped the back of the second – despite him having his hand out.

The mascot kept his hand out but Gallagher never realised and faced away, sparking plenty of abuse online and has forced Chelsea to release a statement.

On their official club website, they said: “Chelsea Football Club is aware of a video clip circulating on social media from Saturday’s fixture against Burnley, which has been taken considerably out of context.

“The subsequent level of abuse and defamatory comments directed towards Conor Gallagher is completely unacceptable.

“We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome.”

A picture shared to social media later on featured Gallagher with his arms around both mascots as he led them out onto the pitch.

Pochettino also defends Gallagher

Speaking ahead of their game against Manchester United on Thursday, Pochettino emphatically shared his support for the England international.

“That has upset me so much. Because no one wants to do something like this, with this intention,” he said.

“When you play football and you are there and focusing to play and start the game, that sometimes can happen.

“People try to find things to create a mess and to abuse. Conor is a great, great kid and is always caring about everything. I hate that people feel free to abuse on social media. To abuse the people is so easy. So easy. Who thinks the intention of Conor is to ignore a mascot? No one. Come on.”

Gallagher may be moved on in the summer to ease FFP fears

It doesn’t take a genius to figure that there hasn’t been much to write home about for Chelsea this year.

Another year of mediocrity awaits the Stamford Bridge faithful but one of the few shining lights is Gallagher.

Wearing the armband, the midfielder plays like a true fan would. Putting his body on the line, getting here, there and everywhere but given Chelsea’s excessive spending and there need to raise funds to stay within the rules, Gallagher may be sold in the summer.

Since he came through the academy, Gallagher would be classed as straight profit if sold and would be a great source of income to help balance the books.

Spurs have been interested in the midfielder and while the club don’t want to be punished, if he is sold, they will lose one of the few people who truly gets what it means to play for the two-time European champions.
