‘He’s a big-club manager’

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes that Thomas Tuchel is the perfect candidate to replace Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag’s future is up in the air following another dismal campaign and reports that Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to overhaul the playing and coaching staff as part of his long-term vision.

Tuchel meanwhile will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season after they missed out on a first Bundesliga title in 12 years.

But the German has been touted with a quick return to management and the potentially soon-to-be-vacant role at Old Trafford is one he has been linked with numerous times.

Tuchel impresses at interview

Reports have suggested that the former Chelsea manager has already made contact with officials at Man United and impressed in the interview, making him one of the favourites for the role.

Asked for his views while on BeIN Sports, Schmeichel felt there wasn’t many better to take the reigns at Old Trafford.

“I like Thomas Tuchel. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing him a couple of times and his football knowledge is fantastic,” he said.

“He’s been a little bit unlucky with being at two big football clubs at the wrong time of their history, at times where things weren’t working on every level. It’s not that he didn’t do well Chelsea, for instance. I mean, he won the Champions League, didn’t he?!

“I just like him, there’s something about him. He projects an authority. Never compare people but he’s got the same kind of thing that [Jurgen] Klopp has. You know he’s the boss and you know what he’s doing.”

Despite Bayern’ below-par performance domestically they could still end the season with a trophy.

They face Real Madrid in the semi finals of the Champions League, starting with the first leg on Tuesday.
