Graeme Souness accuses new Brighton boss of insufficient knowledge of Premier League

It’s our game isn’t it, Graeme?

Typically measured pundit Graeme Souness is surprisingly unconvinced by the appoint of Roberto De Zerbi as Brighton’s new manager.

De Zerbi was confirmed on Sunday as the replacement for Graham Potter – who departed for Chelsea – and has signed a four-year contract at the Amex Stadium.

But Souness, who is often open to varying styles of football in the Premier League, has been left underwhelmed by the appointment, highlighting that De Zerbi has no knowledge of the top flight.

The pundit, who absolutely loves our game, was dismayed by Brighton bringing in someone who may be able to innovate a new style of play.

“I think it’s a risk,” he told talkSPORT.

“You’re bringing in someone who doesn’t know our game, because of modern technology you can Google and he said he was impressed with his knowledge of Brighton and what they’ve done – he could have got that off Google.”

Souness then counter-acted fellow presenter Jim White’s point and believes that he only got the job off the basis of doing a bit of research on the internet.

He added: “He’s gone for an interview, so he spends a couple of hours on the internet getting as much information as he possibly can, that’s not the work of a genius.

“If you’re an outstanding coach the people want to hold on to you, it’s a bit like being a player.

“If you’re a player who has had 12-15 clubs, that tells a lot about you.”

De Zerbi’s first game in charge is away at Liverpool on Saturday October 1.
