This simple trick could save you a lot of money on your train tickets

Kevin Beirne

Booking a train ticket can be a real pain in backside sometimes.

You’d naturally think that it’d be cheaper to grab a train than a flight, but that isn’t always the case.

If you travel a lot, regularly buying train tickets can add up very quickly and leave you pretty broke. But thankfully there is a simple way to save money on your train tickets called ticket splitting.

Basically, instead of buying a direct ticket from say London Euston to Birmingham New Street – which costs £170 – you can save money by booking two singles from London Euston to Coventry and from Coventry to Birmingham New Street for £153.60 altogether. It’s the exact same train, just cheaper.

You can get away with this on a number of journeys. All you have to do is look up the calling points for your trip and see if it’s cheaper to book two separate journeys along the way instead of one long one.

It takes a bit more time to book, but might be worth it instead of paying the full fare.
