Huge news for learner drivers as they’ll no longer have to know key manoeuvers

This will go down well with learners - but perhaps less so with other drivers

This will go down well with learners – but perhaps less so with other drivers.

Drivers of a certain age will remember the stress and frustration of learning to carry out tricky manoeuvers for their driving test. They were such tricky skills to master and led to many a frustrating lesson holding up traffic in the hope of finally getting it right.

That said, they are skills you remember all your life, and techniques that fundamentally improve your ability to get out of tight spots (or into them as the case may be). But imminent changes to the driving test in this country will mean key manoeuvers will no longer be required.

From December 4, learners will no longer need to master the arts of reversing around a corner or a three-point turn. Two things they will almost definitely need to do during their practical motoring life. They will however need to know to reverse out of a parking space (which we assumed was relatively straight forward).

Parallel parking and pulling in on the right hand side of the road will still be part of the test.
