Remember when the Fast and the Furious movies were just about illegal drag races?
It didn’t take very long for the series to spin out to an all-consuming blockbuster series that found itself levelling major metropolitan areas, but then solid structures were never going to be safe once you got The Rock, Vin Diesel and Jason Statham near them.
Insurance company InsureTheGap.com went through all seven Fast and Furious movies to date – the upcoming The Fate Of The Furious hasn’t been accounted for yet – and after making some astute calculations of the stunts in the movies, they ascertained that over $514 million worth of damages would have been caused.
Is it just us, or does that seem a little on the low side? Didn’t Fast & Furious 6 blow up an entire airplane on the world’s longest runway? Didn’t Furious 7 level most of Los Angeles with a missile-equipped drone?
Funnily enough, out of that number, over $320 million was caused by the “heroes”, with the bad guys only accounting for $194 million of the damages.
Breaking that down to individuals, Vin Diesel caused just shy of $69 million worth of carnage, followed by The Rock at $32 million and Paul Walker at $16 million.
They all pale in comparison to Jason Statham, who manages to rack up a $182 million bill single-handedly, despite technically only being in one movie so far.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, those first few “cheaper” movies didn’t leave much of a dent, with the The Fast & Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast & The Furious: Toyko Drift and Fast & Furious (seriously, who named these?) barely combining $5 million between them.
However, things picked up significantly right around the same time the movies started getting really good.
Fast Five caused around $20 million worth of damages, and we imagine most of that came from volleying an entire bank safe around the streets of Rio.
Fast & Furious 6 jumps up to $200 million, and most of that probably comes from that pre-mentioned wrecked aircraft.
Furious 7 goes higher again, estimated to put a $290 million hole in the world, with two-thirds of that coming from Statham alone.
The upcoming The Fate Of The Furious features a nuclear submarine and all of downtown New York involved in a massive pile-up, so we’re guessing that number will be going higher again.
And in case you were wondering, the single most expensive car destroyed to date is the Lykan Hypersport in Furious 7 that Vin Diesel drives out the window of an Abu Dhabi skyscraper.
