The stars of True Detective season 3 have been confirmed

Can it recapture the glories of the first season?

Wil Jones

The first season of True Detective was some of the greatest TV of recent years. It formed part of Matthew McConaughey’s move from rom-com heartthrob to acting heavyweight, and equally great support form Woody Harrelson. The second season starred Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn, and divided fans of the universally loved debut series.

For a while it looked like season three might not happen – but in August HBO confirmed the show would return. And as the show is an anthology, it has a whole new cast each season for fans to speculate about. It even became a meme in 2014, with the hashtag #TrueDetectiveSeason2 accompanying various unlike duos to replace McConaughey and Harrelson.

It had already been announced the brilliant Mahershala Ali, who won an Oscar for Moonlight and also appeared in Netflix’s Luke Cage, would be starring in he third season.

And now his co-star has been announced: English/Nigerian actress Carmen Ejogo. She is best known for playing Seraphina Picquery in the Fantastic Beasts films, and also appeared in The Purge: Anarchy, and Alien Covenant.

Will the show be able to recapture the glories of the first season? It might be a wait to find out though – there’s no premiere date set as of yet.
