Southampton fans get carried away with baffling Europa League song (Video)

Tom Victor

There’s been a dearth of top quality football songs of late, and the latest effort from a pair of Southampton fans suggests it will get worse before it gets better.

While other clubs have used the medium of music to celebrate World Cup campaigns or cup final appearances, the bar is slightly lower for Ronald Koeman’s side.

The Red Stripez, presumably named for the beer they were drinking when they decided this was a good idea, have released Southampton in Europa, a cult classic in the making that does what no one has attempted before and rhymes “back” with “back”.

After watching Saints heroes like Paul Jones and the rousing chorus of ‘Koeman takes us higher’, we were reminded of a couple of things.

The late 80s/early 90s influences are laid on thick, with the duo seemingly inspired in part by England’s 1990 World Cup song World in Motion.

But when you strip back the references to Fraser Forster and Jose Fonte, there’s another cult YouTube hit hiding in there.
