Manchester United's director of football Jason Wilcox hoped to reunite with his old gaffer Russell Martin at Carrington, reports today have revealed.
In 2024, Wilcox suggested The Red Devils chiefs appoint Martin, having previously worked with him at Southampton.
Wilcox originally hired Martin at the South Coast club, where they then won promotion in the 2024 play-off final, defeating Leeds United at Wembley.
Martin was then sacked by the Saints in the Premier League after a poor start to the campaign in the top-flight.
Though, in a new report from The Athletic, he spoke highly of Martin when United were evaluating alternative managers to Erik ten Hag.
United then eventually went on to hire former boss Ruben Amorim instead, before the current appointment of Michael Carrick.
Since then, Martin has had a spell at Rangers followed by the current League 1 outfit Leicester City, where he has been at since his appointment in the summer.
Away from the third tier, pressure has mounted on United boss Carrick, with the likes of Eddie Howe and Unai Emery linked to the hot seat as a potential alternative - should the club and Carrick soon part ways.
