Austen fans may not have seen the last of Mary Bennet

A second full series of The Other Bennet Sister looks unlikely, but Ella Bruccoleri has hinted that Mary Bennet's story could still return in a different format.

The BBC has not announced another season, and Bruccoleri said the cast had been told not to expect one as the production team moves on to other projects.

"It's well known we won't be doing another series, because they're going off and exploring other things," she told Radio Times, in comments reported by Digital Spy.

That does not necessarily mean audiences have seen the last of Mary. Bruccoleri said the possibility of shorter installments had been discussed, leaving the door open for occasional returns without a full-length follow-up.

"There's more to explore, definitely," she said. "But there's a world in which we might come back for these kinds of small chunks."

She was careful not to suggest anything had been confirmed, adding: "That might happen, it might not happen. It's being floated but equally, it could end there."

The BBC is also reportedly interested in adapting Jane Austen's Persuasion, although Bruccoleri did not identify that project as the reason the team is moving on.

Bruccoleri says the BBC drama doesn’t leave viewers hanging

The original drama followed Mary, the often-overlooked middle Bennet sister, as she revisited the events of Pride and Prejudice from her own perspective before travelling to London to pursue a life beyond her family's expectations.

Its first run consisted of ten episodes released between March and April 2026, with a three-part Christmas special due later this year.

Bruccoleri believes the story has already reached a satisfying endpoint, explaining that the series was not designed to leave viewers waiting for another chapter.

"It hasn't been left on a cliffhanger, and we didn't do that with the series either," she said. "I think it's nice to just feel like each one kind of wraps itself up."
