"Since 1920, there have been about 130 superhero and comic book films with solo protagonists in the United States, both on the big and small screens... Do you know how many of those 130 films had female leads? Eight."In celebration of the first major tentpole superhero movie with a female - which is also directed by a female, no-less - the world-famous Alamo Drafthouse cinema in Texas and New York are having a Women-Only screening of the blockbuster comic book movie Wonder Woman. As per their invitation:
"Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying 'No Guys Allowed' for one special night at the Alamo Ritz. And when we say 'People Who Identify As Women Only,' we mean it. Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female."Also, all the proceeds from the screenings will be going to charity organisation Planned Parenthood: https://twitter.com/AlamoNYC/status/867837024677572608 Almost immediately, some folk began complaining. And by folk, we mean some rather closed-minded men. CNN reported on men tweeting "I hope someone sues this is discrimination based on sex" or posting on the Facebook event page for the screening "Great, let us know when you have guys-only screenings of Thor, Spider-Man, Star Wars, etc. Let's see you walk the walk now that you set this precedence." The Alamo Drafthouse have responded directly to most of the negativity, and when asked why there has never been any men-only screenings, they responded: "We've never done showings where you had to be a man to get in, but we *did* show the 'Entourage' movie a few years ago." Oh, and they responded by adding even more Women-Only screenings of the movie, all of which have already sold out: https://twitter.com/drafthouse/status/867772785711513600
