Tina’s agent said she died ‘peacefully’

Tina Turner has died aged 83, her spokesperson has said.

In a statement, the singer’s representative said: “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.

“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”

A post on her official Instagram page reads: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner.

“With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.

“Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”

Tina, born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26 in 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee, found fame in the late 1960s as the singer of the band Ike & Turner Revue, alongside her ex-husband Ike Turner, but later went on to become a solo artist.

The domestic abuse Ike subjected Tina to was documented in a 1993 Hollywood biopic starring Angela Bassett, which won three Oscars.

Her life story was also immortalised in a popular West End show that is still running and she has and has a star on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St Louis Walk of Fame.

Tina sold more than 180 million albums and won 8 Grammy Awards.

Her biggest hits include ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’, ‘Private Dancer’ and ‘The Best’.

Turner married her long-time German beau, the music executive Erwin Bach, in a civil ceremony in 2013 and lived in Switzerland with him since 1994.

Tina had suffered ill health in recent years, being diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and having a kidney transplant in 2017.
