Scrubs reboot is officially happening with original cast set to return

It sounds like we're returning to Sacred Heart Hospital

Deadline reports that the project is still in its early stages, but it has been officially confirmed by ABC that the reboot is happening.

The studio behind the original series, 20th Television, will be producing the revival, and original creator Bill Lawrence will also be heavily involved, although he won't be acting as show-runner.

According to Deadline, Lawrence's involvement had been the main hurdle for ABC to overcome. He is under and exclusive overall deal at Warner Bros TV, so negotiations had been underway for several weeks to reach an agreement that would secure his involvement in the project.

Whilst cast details have yet to be confirmed, Deadline reports that discussions are already underway with original cast members, including lead Zach Braff.

The hospital-based sitcom ran for nine seasons from 2001 to 2010, and followed the lives of employees at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, as they worked their way up from interns to doctors.

The series was loved by the public and critics alike, and received 17 Emmy nominations during its run, winning two.

Braff starred as main character John ‘J.D.’ Dorian, who provided the narration and whose daydreams often gave way to surreal alternative realities that the series became famous for.

The rest of the cast was made up of his love interest Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), best friend Donald Faison (Chris Turk), Judy Reyes (Chris’s wife Carla Espinosa), John McGinley (Perry Cox), Ken Jenkins (Bob Kelso) and Christa Miller (Perry’s ex-wife Jordan Sullivan).

The likes of Braff and Faison have both previously said they’d be up for an on-screen reunion. When asked back in 2017 about the show returning, Braff said he’d “do it”, whilst Faison said: “We all want a reboot and want to work together again.”

However, he said he didn’t think it could be a full season, and would have to be “a movie or something we could shoot in a few months.”

Back in October, Lawrence told Deadline that a Scrubs return was "getting really close to being figured out," adding that he believed a hybrid cast made up of old and new characters would be the best way forward.

Rumours of a Scrubs revival have swirled for years, whilst there's also been chatter about a potential film. However, Lawrence has previously ruled out a Scrubs film.
