Scrubs creator says reboot of the show is moving forward

'We all feel like we do have stories to tell'

After more than 14 years away from our screens, the much-loved US show is making a return as Lawrence revealed new details about the reboot.

Scrubs ran for nine series from 2001 to 2010, but Lawrence has said he and the cast still reckon there are some stories left to tell.

The hospital-based sitcom followed the lives of the employees working at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, as they worked their way up from interns to doctors.

In an interview with Deadline, Lawrence said: “I think it’s getting really close to being figured out, and I think in a good way. Big chunks of the creative team behind the camera, and most of it from in front of the camera, are all super invested and excited, so very close.”

He believes a hybrid cast of old and new characters is the best way forward as plans for a new series begin to take shape.

“We’ve been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo. A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot.

“But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine[...] So I think that no matter what it is, it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things.”

The original cast have already expressed their interest in returning to the show if a reboot was commissioned.

Zach Braff starred as main character John ‘J.D.’ Dorian, who provided the narration and whose daydreams often gave way to surreal alternative realities that the series became famous for.

The rest of the cast was made up of his love interest Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), best friend Donald Faison (Chris Turk), Judy Reyes (Chris’s wife Carla Espinosa), John McGinley (Perry Cox), Ken Jenkins (Bob Kelso) and Christa Miller (Perry’s ex-wife Jordan Sullivan).

During its run, Scrubs also featured some pretty impressive cameos from the likes of Michael J. Fox and Colin Farrell.

The series was loved by the public and critics alike, and received 17 Emmy nominations during its run, winning two.

The likes of Braff and Faison have both previously said they'd be up for an on-screen reunion. When asked back in 2017 about the show returning, Braff said he'd "do it", whilst Faison said: "We all want a reboot and want to work together again."

However, he said he didn't think it could be a full season, and would have to be "a movie or something we could shoot in a few months."

Whilst there have previously been rumours of the cast reuniting for a Scrubs film, Lawrence told the Independent this wouldn't be happening.

He said: "I’m not going to do a movie. That sounds like a lot of work!”
