Nickelodeon refused to cut ‘sexualised’ scene, claims ex-Victorious star

Many of the allegations point towards creator Dan Schneider, specifically

Actor Daniella Monet has joined former Nickelodeon alum Jeanette McCurdy in calling out the company following recent criticism that the channel supposedly allowed for many of its teen stars to be “sexualised” across a number of shows.

This comes after the revelations laid out in McCurdy’s recently published memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, in which she detailed numerous instances of alleged abuse and inappropriate behaviour, including being offered hush money to keep quiet.

As a result, people on social media also went back through clips of the popular children’s TV show, highlighting some rather uncomfortable scenes featuring a younger Ariana Grande.

Compounding the criticism and controversy further, Monet – who played Trina Vega on Victorious told Insider that some of the outfits the young cast were made to wear were “not age appropriate” and that she “wouldn’t even wear some of that today as an adult.”

Moreover, she also recalled a scene where she was asked to eat a pickle while applying lip gloss, and despite expressing concern that it was too sexual to air, Nickelodeon aired it anyway.

While the now-33-year-old actor noted that most of the show was “very PC, funny, silly, friendly, chill,”, she confessed: “Do I wish certain things, like, didn’t have to be so sexualized? Yeah. A hundred percent.”

Many of reports centre around creator Dan Schneider, who in addition to Victorious is responsible for some of the biggest kids TV shows of the era, including Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, iCarly and many more.

Alexa Nikolas, who starred in the first two seasons of Zoey 101, also told Insider about her “traumatising” experience at the network over a number of years, claiming that Schneider would often take photos with teenage actresses sitting on his lap.

This isn’t the first time prominent male figures from within the Nickelodeon bubble have been embroiled in controversy either, as Drake & Josh star Drake Bell was convicted of child endangerment back in 2021.

Neither the 56-year-old Schneider, nor Nickelodeon themselves, have issued a statement regarding the allegations but there are growing calls for a proper investigation to be launched into its workplace culture throughout the years.
