Following on from the hit crime series, Luther: The Fallen Sun is arriving very soon
Netflix has released an official trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun, a movie continuation of the hit crime thriller series focusing on Idris Elba's brooding detective John Luther.
In the film, a serial killer (Andy Serkis) is terrorising London, all the while a now-disgraced Luther is stuck in prison.
"Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary," Netflix's logline reads.
Along with Elba and Serkis, Oscar-nominee Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Widows) will appear in the film, alongside Dermot Crowley, who reprises his role from the series as Luther's boss Martin Schenk.
Luther premiered in 2010 and has run for five seasons, earning acclaim for its stylish cinematography, tense plotlines and charismatic central turn by Elba.
Rumours of a film version of the show had been swirling ever since the end of its fifth season in 2019.
The Fallen Sun's screenplay comes from Luther creator Neil Cross, with the movie to be directed by Jamie Payne who helmed the entire fifth season of the show.
However, while there has been speculation that series fan-favourite character Alice Morgan (played by Ruth Wilson) - a nemesis and love interest to Luther - could make an appearance in the film, this has yet to be confirmed.
Luther: The Fallen Sun will release in select theatres sometime in February before arriving on Netflix globally on 10 March.
