Led Zeppelin on bourbon, on stage and on the Starship – here are exclusive images of the legendary band

Whole Lotta Love...

Lia Nicholls

Here’s the proof Led Zeppelin’s ‘Starship’ was as plush and perfect as we imagined it to be.

A soft carpeted room with sofas, an ornate clock and even a ruddy fireplace; it’s hard to believe this is a plane.

This is a snap of the heavyweight rockers, taken by photographer Michael Brennan, chilling out in one of the back rooms on their famous Boeing 720.

It was 1975 and the band were travelling to New York after playing a gig in Detroit. They were chatting and drinking, apparently to calm their nerves as they weren’t too fond of flying after experiencing terrifying turbulence on a small plane a couple of years earlier. Although, they found they could cope with being airborne on their palatial chartered plane. Funny that…

Elsewhere on board was a 30-foot long couch and an electronic organ, which was built into a bar and a main bedroom, complete with a white fur bedspread and shower room.

This is just one of the behind-the-scenes snaps soon to be showcased in a new exhibition.

Robert Plant shirtless and strutting on stage, Jimmy Page plucking guitar strings with his teeth, John Bonham taking time out and portraits of the band away off stage will be on display in ‘Led Zeppelin from the Beginning’ at Proud Chelsea from August 21.

We’ve kindly been given a few images for a mini preview, which you can see in the gallery above.

Led Zeppelin from the Beginning is at Proud Chelsea, August 21 to October 4.
